Why session timing matters for a strategy
Most of a day's FX range is set during the London/New York overlap, between about 13:00 and 17:00 UTC in US summer time. Several of the strategies published on this site exist only because of a specific session clock - the Gotobi Tokyo Fix trades the 09:55 Tokyo fix on 5/10/15/20/25 and month-end, and the WMR Fix Reversal trades the 16:00 London fix.
Daylight saving shifts each session's UTC window by one hour at different weekends across the year. If your EA uses hard-coded broker-server hours, the window drifts twice a year unless you handle DST explicitly. The times here read live IANA timezone data, so they are already right for today.
Common questions
What are the four forex trading sessions?
Sydney (07:00-16:00 Australia/Sydney), Tokyo (09:00-18:00 Asia/Tokyo), London (08:00-17:00 Europe/London), and New York (08:00-17:00 America/New_York). This tool converts those local market hours into your own timezone and highlights where they overlap, with daylight saving handled per-market automatically.
When is the forex market most active?
The London/New York overlap, roughly 13:00-17:00 UTC in US summer time (12:00-16:00 UTC in winter), is the deepest and most volatile window of the day. Most of a day's FX range is set here. The second most active is the Tokyo/London overlap in the morning, which matters most for JPY crosses.
Does the forex market close on weekends?
Yes - the interbank spot market closes around 21:00 UTC Friday and reopens around 21:00 UTC Sunday. Weekend risk is price-gap risk: brokers may halt new entries into the close, and news over the weekend moves Monday's open discontinuously. Several of the strategies published on this site are explicitly scheduled around this close.
How does daylight saving affect session times in UTC?
London and New York each shift by one hour at their own country's DST switch, and Sydney shifts in the opposite direction (southern hemisphere). This means the London/NY overlap in UTC drifts across the year, and the Sydney/Tokyo window stays almost constant. This calculator reads IANA timezone data, so it is already correct for today without you doing the arithmetic.
Why does the Tokyo fix matter?
The 09:55 Tokyo fix is the daily reference rate that Japanese exporters, importers and funds use to price yen flows. It creates a predictable order-flow pattern just before 10:00 Tokyo time, especially on gotobi days (5/10/15/20/25 and month-end). The Gotobi Tokyo Fix strategy on this site trades that specific pattern.
